Why should I hire a lawyer to help me with my ticket?

Most traffic tickets are moving violations. If you just pay your ticket, that means you are pleading guilty to the violation, and under Missouri law, if you plead guilty to a moving violation, you will get points on your driving record. Different violations result in a different number of points. You can see how many points you’ll get for the different violations here. If you get 8 points in an 18 month period, your license will be suspended for at least 30 days. If you get 12 points in a 12 month period, your license will be revoked for a year.

Hiring an attorney can help you avoid getting any points on your driving record. A traffic attorney in Missouri will enter with the court on your behalf and ask the prosecuting attorney to amend the charge to a non-moving violation. If the prosecutor agrees, you will still have a fine to pay, but it will keep anything from going on your record. This will help keep your license from being suspended, but there’s another good reason to hire an attorney to help you with the ticket.

If an attorney fixes your ticket so that you don’t get points on your driving record, it will keep your car insurance rates from going up. Just one speeding ticket can cause your insurance rates to spike, so while hiring an attorney to fix your ticket might cost your more money in the short term (because you’ll have to pay an attorney’s fee and a slightly higher fine), it’ll save you money in the long run by keeping your driving record clean and your insurance rates down.
